UK Capacity Market Reinstated
October 24, 2019
The European Commission has written to the National Grid Electricity System Operator and Electricity Statements Company to confirm the Commission’s approval of the UK Capacity Market.
As a consequence the UK Capacity Market is reinstated. Delivery for the 2019/20 year begins and preparations for a T-1, T-4 and a replacement T-3 Capacity auction to occur in 2020 begin.

It is one of the first cohort of large batteries that will provide frequency response balancing services to the National Grid with effect from January 1st 2018. UK Government Announce their Strategic Intent

UK Power Generation has first Coal-Free Day

For the first time since the 1880s and the industrial revolution the UK has a day where national power is generated without the burning of coal. For over 24 hours, from about 23:00 on Thursday 20th April until midnight on Friday the 21st of April there was zero contribution to the UK National Grid by coal.

The Economist publishes an article entitled “Clean Energy’s Dirty Secret – Wind and Solar Power are Disrupting Electricity Systems”, which discusses the various challenges created by renewable energy systems to the existing energy market. Expounding on the complexities of the existing market the article goes on to conclude as to the positive impact of new technologies such as batteries, and that the ultimate challenge is a redesign of the energy market to take into account the world of renewable energy that we are ever expanding.
